The Undone: Do It
Audio installation, constructed listening environments

University of Michigan, Green Road Studios, 2023

The Undone: Do It is an IVR based choose-your-own-adventure narrative. Participants call a hotline number that presents them with a series of choice options that move them through a series of many possible story pathways surrounding care of a terminally ill  loved one. The design of this audio performance allows participants to engage with the gravity of the constant choices that caregivers make. These choices are often made with limited time and information, all the while supervised and observed (both by patient and biological family members of the patient). At the end of each story pathway, participants have the option to hang up or start over from the beginning, as if it were possible to re-edit and redo past choices to arrive at different results. Each story pathway, though, will end the same way, regardless of audience decisions, which serves as a commentary on ideas of agency, futility, destiny, hope, and hopelessness, all via a repurposed familiar technical format, which materially roots the narrative content in memory and lived experience.
