Cooped Up: Drive-in Dances for Cooped Up People
(live performance)

Collaboration with Evelena Doell and Ari Kaufman

Cooped Up happened early after lockdown when COVID restrictions were new. The audience viewed this piece in their personal cars and dancers performed in their homes. Audience members arrived at the starting location, armed with a start time, a sound file on their phone, and a google maps route with GPS pins on 7 locations.

At a precise moment, the audience members would start their cars, press play on the sound file, and begin their navigation, which would lead them on a strange and surreal scavenger hunt through the city to find the performers.

20 cars of audience members entered the piece one at a time every 10 minutes, and dancers performed their scores repeatedly on 10 minute loops, beginning again with the arrival of each new car.

The dancers explored a variety of themes relevant to the current state of the world under quarantine, including, loneliness, technological over-stimulation, lack of space and privacy, manic productivity, and seeking connection.

The soundscape included music, meditations, stories, and directions to help cars move effectively through the piece.
